Karl Polanyi (1866-1964) believed that the greatest threat to freedom was a poorly administered economy. His research led him to see the possibility and necessity of an economics that was more existential and human-centred.
Inspired by his work entited The Great Transformation, a whole generation of leading international scholars and critics carry on in the Polanyi tradition. This series, from the work of the Karl Polanyi Institute of Political Economy at Concordia University in Montréal, is the result.
THE KARL POLANYI INSTITUTE OF POLITICAL ECONOMY
On the Institute: Polanyi's far-reaching critique of the philosophical and historical foundations of liberalism and economic determinism opens important avenues of academic research based on cross-disciplinary approaches. The KPIPE nurtures work in the following areas:
1. Methodological contributions to the study of the place of economy in society;
2. an extention of economics beyond a narrowly defined study of the laws of market exchange to embrace redistribution and reciprocity as organizing mechanisms of economic activity; Polanyi's mixed econonics, including socialist and third world variants;
3. The development of a political economy approach to the study of international economic relations;
4. Education as an essential condition of participatory democracy;
5. The trends towards convergence of approaches to economic and social policy in the "Eastern" and "Western" countries of Central Europe.To do these things, the KPIPE organizes conferences, public lectures and a biennial international conference; it has established a wide international and interdisciplinary network of research; it produces a Working Paper series, and two series of books (one of which is presented here); the institute houses the Karl Polanyi Archive.
